A newly registered domain that turns out to be wrong can be returned inside the grace window, with the refund credited once the registry agrees.
The domain has to be within 5 days of registration, and not locked by a completed marketplace sale.
Name the domain and the reason. We submit the request to the registry for you.
If the registry approves, the refund lands in the account balance.

The window counts calendar days from the moment the registration completes. Past it, the only routes left are renewal or redemption.
One is still cheap to fix, the other is not
Note the two different things: this is the renewal grace period after a domain expires. The registration grace period is the window shortly after registering in which an eligible domain can be returned. The rules and the deadlines are not the same.
| Stage | State of the domain | Cost to renew | What is still possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grace period | Usually no longer resolving, record still held | The ordinary renewal price | Renew at the normal price and it comes back |
| Redemption | The record is held pending restoration | A redemption fee set by the registry, often several times the renewal | Pay to restore; not offered by every ending |
| Pending delete | Waiting for the registry to clear the record | No payment brings it back | Wait for release and try to register it - with no guarantee |
The registration is released and the name goes back to being available to anyone. Returning it is not the same as holding it for you.
The registrar sets this, usually within a few days of registration, and only some endings take part. The window column in the table is the one that applies to that ending.
The registry handles it inside the window and the registration fee already paid is normally not refunded. The ending rules decide, so open a ticket first if you are unsure.
No. The grace period after expiry is for renewing at the ordinary price; the registration grace period here is for returning the domain. The two timelines start at different points and end differently.
The return mechanism comes from the registry and not every ending offers one. Register a name on those endings and the only way out is to let it expire.
A window after registration in which a new domain can be returned, usually the first 5 days. ICANN requires registrars to offer it, but the registry decides whether to approve, and some endings do not take part at all.
A grace deletion is about a newly registered domain and ends in a refund. The renewal grace period is about a domain that has already expired, where paying late is what stops it being released. They are different stages and should not be confused.
An approved refund is credited to the account balance, ready for future registrations or renewals. Say so in the ticket if you need it back on the original payment method.
Some registries do not offer grace deletion, and some cap the proportion of registrations that may be returned. Where that applies we tell you before submitting, rather than charging first and returning later.
Better not. The registrar states plainly that a domain in its registration grace period may no longer be returned once it sells on the marketplace. It is one or the other.
It depends on the registry, usually a few business days. We keep the progress in the ticket.
From choosing a name to managing it, these usually happen one after another in the same session.
