Domain Registration Agreement

ICANN rules, WHOIS, renewals and domain disputes.

This agreement applies to domain names you register, renew or transfer through us, and forms part of the Terms of Service. Where the two differ, this agreement prevails.

1. The rules that bind you directly

Registering a domain creates a relationship not only with us but with the registrar and with the registry that operates the extension. The following therefore bind you directly:

  • ICANN's policies on registered name holders and registration data;
  • the rules of the registry operating your extension (Verisign for .com, the Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Company Limited (HKDNR) for .hk, and so on);
  • the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) and, where applicable, the Uniform Rapid Suspension system (URS);
  • for .hk domains, HKDNR's Domain Name Registration Agreement and its Dispute Resolution Policy (HKDRP) apply in addition, and HKDNR may suspend or cancel a domain under its rules.

When these rules change we must follow them; they are outside our control.

2. Registration data and accuracy

ICANN requires the registered name holder to give accurate, complete and current contact information.

  • You must update your details in the client area whenever they change.
  • After registration the registrar may send a verification email. You must respond within 15 days; if you do not, the domain is suspended from resolving until verification is complete.
  • Deliberately giving false, forged or third-party details may lead to cancellation of the domain without refund.
  • How we handle registration data is described in the Privacy Policy.

3. WHOIS / RDDS

Some of your registration data is published to the public (typically the registrant name, country, registration and expiry dates and nameservers). Which fields appear depends on the extension and the data protection rules in force. Where the extension supports it you may request privacy/proxy protection; that protection can be lifted in response to a legitimate request, a UDRP/URS proceeding or a law enforcement requirement.

4. Renewal, expiry and redemption

Domains run for a fixed term and lapse if they are not renewed. The process varies by extension, but is usually:

StageTypical periodWhat happens
Renewal reminders30 and 7 days before expirySent to the email address on your account.
Expired0-30 daysThe domain stops resolving; it can still be renewed at the normal price.
Redemption30-60 daysIt can only be restored by paying the registry's redemption fee, which is set by the registry.
DeletedAbout 65-75 daysThe name is released and anyone may register it; it is normally lost for good.

5. Fees

Registration, renewal and transfer prices are published on this website, and the price shown at checkout governs. Prices may change with registry pricing and exchange rates; we normally give at least 30 days notice before the expiry date of a change in renewal price.

Because the fee is paid over to the registrar and registry irrevocably the moment a registration succeeds, the registration fee, renewal fee and transfer-in fee of a registered domain are not refundable - see the Cancellation and Refund Policy.

6. Transfers

Transferring in: the domain must have been registered for at least 60 days, must be unlocked, and you must hold the authorisation (EPP/auth) code from your current provider. A successful transfer usually extends the registration by one year.

Transferring out: you may move a domain away at any time. The authorisation code is available in your client area or on request; we provide it within 5 days, free of charge. We will not obstruct a transfer while you have no unpaid invoices.

Under ICANN rules a domain cannot be transferred within 60 days of registration or of a previous transfer. It also cannot be transferred while a dispute proceeding is pending, while it is locked by court or authority order, or after the registration has expired.

7. Disputes

A third party may bring a UDRP or URS proceeding against your domain on the basis of a trade mark. Those proceedings are run by ICANN-approved providers (such as WIPO or HKIAC) and are not decided by us. If a panel or a court orders a transfer, cancellation or lock, we must carry it out. For .hk domains, HKDNR's dispute resolution policy applies.

8. Nameservers

You may change your domain's nameservers at any time. Our nameservers are used by default. A nameserver change normally takes 24-48 hours to take effect across the internet, and that propagation is outside our control.

9. Our liability

Our liability in relation to a domain is limited to the fees you paid us for that domain, and is subject to section 9 of the Terms of Service. We are not liable for decisions of the registry or the registrar, for changes in ICANN or HKDNR policy, for the application of extension-specific rules, or for the loss of a domain because you did not renew it or did not answer a verification request.

If a registration fails because of an error in our systems and the name is taken by someone else in the meantime, our liability is limited to refunding what we charged you.
