Some of the fields in a domain registration are published through public WHOIS/RDDS lookups — usually the registrant name, the country or region, the registration and expiry dates, and the nameservers.
What privacy / proxy protection does
Where the suffix supports it, switching on privacy or proxy protection replaces your contact details in public lookups with those of the proxy service, which cuts down scraping and abuse.
Worth knowing
- Protection does not change who owns the domain; it is still yours.
- Protection can be lifted under a lawful request, a UDRP/URS proceeding or a law-enforcement requirement.
- Some suffixes do not support the service.
Privacy protection can be switched on or off on the domain page in the client area.
